CSI Miami David Caruso as Horatio Caine action figure

il_fullxfull.118369662 Looking for a personal gift for the person that has everything? May I suggest this action figure. The one and only CSI Miami – Horatio Caine!

Around my house we don’t miss a single opening of CSI Miami. Why, for the show open when they introduce us to foul play and Horatio Caine does his cameo performance with the cheesiest line ever.  Actually we try to guess the line before he says it.  So for me this action figure is the bomb … it’s poseable, 12 inches tall and it’s a collectible? You’ll find it on etsy.com.

Mobile Web Checklist

The numbers of mobile websites are increasing and it’s clear that mobile web is increasing in importance. I’m told that smartphones will soon outnumber laptop and desktop computers. I use my mobile browser daily.

Are you planning on making a mobile-optimized version of your site? Here is a list of considerations.

1. Make a small or light-version of your site.

2. Make images smaller, optimize the page structure.

3. Remove the flash and Java because many phones don’t support it.

4. Watch file sizes – websites exceeding one megabyte per page are painful over a wireless connection.

5. Don’t skip on the content or your site will be worthless.

Can Google Change China?

China_censorship Have you been to China?  It’s an amazing country with smart very productive people.  Many predict that China will be the leading economic nation soon … or are they now?

The Google machine (no that’s not a slam) thinks that they can muscle China.  In our last Shanghai trip, we found that when you went to an blocked web site or said a word in your email that was against government policy … your computer screen would go black and display a warning for a period of time.  I was told that if you get too many warnings then Chinese security would be on the way. We heeded the warnings and complied.  The NSA thinks they monitor the net?

Now Google wants to offer an uncensored search engine in China? China is changing but not fast enough for Google. Read more ….

Share Documents in the Clouds

Almost everyone I know uses Office or Office for Mac.  Bur sharing documents can be a bother. Even email is not dependible because of Spamfiltering, mail policies and AntiVirus programs that block your attempts to share.

Clouds Have you seen what is going on with all of the servers and services available today?

Sharing is fundamental to cloud computing. This type of sharing uses your Web browser as the window to the cloud experience. With OfficeLive Workspaces, you can view and share Word documents, Excel –spreadsheets, PowerPoint, or many other documents – from anywhere to anywhere. Whether you are at home, at work, at the library, or in a hotel room with Internet. Forget sending e-mail attachments back and forth, or using a thumb-sized flash drive that too often gets misplaced.

Clouds are Everywhere

Computing in the clouds gets even more fun when you see your desktop computer in the clouds. No, nothing has been abducted from your home. Welcome to Mesh, your personal network of your own computers in the sky, viewed in your favorite Web browser. Once your computers are adding to Mesh, you can view any of your computers from all the other computers—and all for free. I use Mesh to connect to my desktop computer at work when I must have a file or need to run a program remotely.

Unfollowing On Twitter

twitter_32 I have had a lot of questions about Twitter unfollowing … it’s really a much discussed topic. What is the proper Twitter etiquette?

Some believe that when someone follows you on Twitter, it’s proper for you to follow them back.

If you are just trying to build followers then go ahead and follow them back. But if you want to build a network of targeted followers of like mind DON’T FOLLOW just anybody.

follow To get value from Twitter follow their content. The Twitter search tool is now very powerful and you can find users to follow based their content or profile. The Twitter stream moves too fast to scan for content manually. There are also some great web based tools to find Tweeters of interest and some client based (installed on your computer) search and follow tools.

I tend to tweet about things I find of interest, and that I think my followers also find interesting. Most of my content is based on Marketing, Technology and Entertainment Follow me to see if my twitter stream appeals to you.

If my followers are not interested, then I have no problem with them unfollowing … I don’t want to waste their time.

Why do I unfollow? If you’re not interesting to me, if you spam me, if you show semi nude avatars, use foul language or try to sell a make money fast scheme, if you don’t tweet in 100 days, or if, after I search your tweet history, I find you’re mostly talking about things I’m not interested in. Nothing personal, I just don’t have the time or bandwidth to follow you in a meaningful way.

Frankly, I may also unfollow you if you do not follow me back, but I will look at your Twitter stream first to see if your content is interesting.

Some of my favorite tools are:

  • Twitter Karma - a great interface to ‘batch’ manage who you’re following
  • Social Too – helps you target people to follow based on their content

Our favorite funny video to date

Untitled-1 Humor is like walking a a bleeding edge.  When Tool of North America Director Erich Joiner’s comedic storytelling was used for Bud Light’s latest viral video from DDB they have a humorous winner at the expense of offending the status quo. The result is an video of amazing awkward moments that make this clever video every very memorable.

We need more humor in advertising! Real humor communicates and connects – humor works on radio and video, with and without proper attire. I recently attended the British Addy Awards (see previous article) and it was full humorous advertising.  I hope we see more humor in American advertising.

Send SMS to a Phone by Email

phone-sms-message-small Ever want to send an email to a phone? Some people NEVER respond to email, just text. While trying to find a text messaging by email solution this morning I found that each phone company has a email portal.  So, you can message per phonecompany or reach all phone companies through teleflip.com (see below.)

I had a specific need for a server alert system to send me a text should the server burp. But this is a great way to text someone from your desktop too.

* Be sure of the recipients messaging plan because some people have to pay per text or have just so many messages in their plan.

(Note: For each carrier, I have included a link to a page with more detailed information on how SMS works with that carrier, how much it costs, and where you can find more information. In the list below, just click any carrier’s highlighted name to find out more. This info is subject to change.)
