Free Food Friday – October 8th @ SoundWorks

FFF

SoundWorks has fun ways of supporting the creative community with Free Food Friday* networking lunches.  Menus for past events have included everything from good ole’ fashioned homemade hamburgers to Mexican, Spanish and Portuguese-inspired dishes prepared by local chefs.  FFF is free lunch fun with Houston creative people.  Dwight Cook of SoundWorks says, “It’s very cool to see graphic designers, writers and filmmakers make personal and business connections. It’s about making the Houston community smaller by getting to know each other.”

The next FFF event on October 8th will feature a Jamaican-themed menu and guests get to suggest their favorite Caribbean tune for download.  Pirate punch for everyone!

* FFF translates: free lunch, invitation only, creative community enjoying creative cuisine. We believe in building this Houston network of  professionals through the art of conversation, a shared perspective, a plate at a time.  FFF is by invitation only, so if you want to attend you might have to twist an arm at SoundWorks.

Promote your expertise with this search engine

Social networks are great for following your friends’ daily musings, but rarely do they help grow your income. I think we all want to leverage social media to help our business efforts – now there is Weedle.

Thrillist - Weedle

Like a LinkedIn/Yellow Pages hybrid, Weddle’s a new platform from Ireland to help users effectively market their professional expertise through mutual contacts which leverages an implicit “element of trust.” Users fill out a description of their vocation (plumber, video producer) and location, back it up with a mini resume and optionally a photo/video of their “skills in action”, then one imports contacts from myriad accounts including Gmail, LinkedIn, and AOL. Users searching for hires (done by skill set) will have their results prioritized based on individuals with whom they share contacts, allowing them to vet you by a trusted source should they choose; if interested, they can reach out.

Once the process is over, both parties can go back “rate” one another and/or comment on the experience.

Traffic JamCam App

trafficcam  How about an app that let’s you peep in on live traffic cameras in major metro areas?  This iPhone app is nice enough to let you peep live traffic cameras of metro ATL’s major interstates and other problem areas; just type in a street/intersection and select your eye(s) in the sky. You can also check a zoomed-out "Map" view, upon which the status (green flags for flowing, red for stalled) of the streets is overlaid. It’s available in the appstore and called “TrafficJamCam Atlanta.”  Now we just need an app for red light cameras.

UH BUYS RICE’S RADIO STATION?

logouh In Houston, TX there’s an uproar on the campus of Rice University because of a potential sale of their FM radio station to the University of Houston for $9.5 million. If the purchase goes through, U of H wants to rename the station from KTRU FM to KUHC FM. This further ignites a flame on Rice’s campus. U of H already has one public radio station, KUHF FM (88.7), which features both news and classical music plus other arts programming. Both radio stations will be affiliates of National Public Radio. KTRU FM (91.7) with its new call letters KUHC FM will broadcast classical music and arts. This allows KUHF FM to concentrate on NPR news and talk. U of H officials say that KUHF will raise the $9.5 million purchase price through private fundraising and increased underwriting also that no state or tuition funds will be used. So it yet to be seen if the Cougars will eat Rice radio.

An iPhone camera lens and lens coffee mug

Photojojo Cell Phone Camera Lenses

Photojojo Canon Lens Cup The people at PhotoJoJo.com have some very cool gifts for the photo enthusiast. One new product is a two lens bundle for the iPhone camera that includes a fisheye, macro and wide angle.  Or how about a Diana lens that converts your $2000+ SLR into a toy camera? One of my favorites is the camera lens mug – a great gift.  This is a cool site.

Microsoft Windows Live Essentials 2011: New beta roll out

Windows_Live_Essentials_logos As expected, Microsoft is making a new beta of its Windows Live Essentials 2011 (known currently as “Wave 4″) available for download starting today, Tuesday, August 17.

Windows Live Essentials is a bundle of a number of the Windows Live add-on services, unified via a common installer. The Wave 4 suite includes updated versions of Messenger, Live Mail, Writer, Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Live Sync (which is now Live Mesh plus the existing Live Sync), Family Safety and the Bing Toolbar. Microsoft delivered a first beta of the Wave 4 bundle in late June.

LiveSide posted a link where anyone interested in testing the Beta 2 build can download it.  The final version is expected to be released to the Web this fall.

I use Live writer almost daily – this is the best tool I’ve seen for posting blogs.

Unified Contacts List

images In OS4 the new Contacts app unifies these contacts so that the names on the ‘All Contacts‘ page appear only once. These listings unify contact names from your iPhone address book, MobileMe account and your corporate exchange server so that you may access all information about your contact from a single page. To access any particular contact card, you simply have to scroll down to the bottom of the contacts page and tap on the Linked Cards section.

Since this is automated, the listing is prone to errors. If you think listings are were wrongly linked. Additionally, users may also insert new contacts to a unified card by tapping on Edit -> Link Contact and choosing a contact name to link. This is especially useful if you want to group a list of users under one head.
