Houston’s Media Biz Can Regain Momentum… If We Work For Change
January 16, 2009
My mom used to always say that I could fall in a pile of poop and come out smelling like a tube rose. I never knew what a tube rose was, but I figured it smelled pretty good. With all the talk about Houston’s media biz looking so dismal, let’s all do something to encourage change and come up smelling like a rose.
This year I am Chairman of OiH and with the current economy I believe this could the best year ever for Only In Houston. We all need to work together to get the word out that Houston is a hotbed for no-compromise creative! Let’s help each other to flourish by keeping business in Houston and attracting out-of-town customers.
What am I doing?
My company is Sound Works, a 30 year old audio post production company. I know my clients are dealing with tighter budgets and need return on money spent (ROI) in order to be successful. We have always provided a great value, but now we have a new focus to help you win, even in this economy.
1. Sound Works New Business Pitch policy will give a needed edge. We will partner with customers to provide audio production or other sound services for a new business pitch at little or no cost.
2. Our Flex Pricing is designed for projects with a tighter budget. We will make our costs fit your needs. Not all projects require it, but we will work with you when your back is against the wall. Just ask.
Our mission is clear: to help Houston business thrive during this downturn.
Step up and move forward in spite of the current economic situation! Maybe if we all work together, we can make a positive change in Houston’s marketing, advertising and creative biz.
Now, what can you do to make a difference? Please post your comments for all to read.

Bring more biz to Houston:
1. Encourage your politician friends to record HERE instead of LA or NY…tell them it will go a long way to getting more votes from our community.
2. I know many of you love a particular beer that is not made in Texas, maybe you can change to St Arnold (Houston) or Shiner Bock (Shiner, TX) and somebody tell those folks in Shiner that they have fans in Houston so they will come her to do their production.
3. Talk up Only In Houston!!! I was at a BMA luncheon this week and I was amazed at how many people had never heard of Only In Houston. One guy was LOOKING FOR NEW CREATIVE OUTLETS for his oil company. I sent him over to Onlyinhouston.org
If you know anyone who might do any sort of creative, talk up our industry…we have the most amazing professionals!

Not only do you have great production people and facilities in Houston, the talent pool is exceptional. I’ve been living and working in NYC for about 12 years now, and I’m continually impressed by how many Houston-born and/or Houston-trained talent I end up working with in most productions (commercial, film, stage). New York actors have nothing on Houstonians in terms of talent, training and professionalism. I think anyone can cast in Houston with the confidence that they have access to world-class talent.
